The gap could have been much closer between the top two but for a 9.7s second final pit stop for Button, which robbed the amassed crowds of a potential grandstand finish. The victory marked Mercedes' first victory since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber passed Sebastian Vettel in the final three laps to secure third and fourth as the defending champion struggled on a 24 lap-old set of tyres. Romain Grosjean secured a solid sixth place after his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen dropped 10 places between laps 48 and lap 50 on old tyres and eventually slipped out of the points. Jenson Button was the only driver who threatened to challenge the German, but a pit stop blunder meant he had to settle for second. Lewis Hamilton ensured both McLaren drivers were on the podium, and his third straight third place means he becomes the championship leader. Red Bull recovered from a disappointing qualifying session to salvage fourth and fifth places, with enterprising pit stop strategies helping Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel up the field. (
